Author Interview: Laura Lux

I want to welcome Laura Lux, the author of several gay fantasy tales–from medieval and historical fiction to the new Elf Thief series, to the J. Ashburn Blog. Thank you Laura for taking the time to do this interview.

When did you first start writing fiction? Oh, I’d say when I was a teenager. I doodled a lot in school, scribbles, sketches, poems, short stories. I loved telling stories.

Did you have any formal writing training or education? No, not really. Just lot’s of practice at home.

What drew you to fantasy fiction?  My mom. Lol. She and I used to watch all kinds of fantasy movies when I was a kid from Conan the Barbarian to old seventies movies like The People that Time Forgot and At the Earth’s Core. But some of my favorites were the animated stuff like The Last Unicorn, Wizards and The Hobbit. The Hobbit was one of the first fantasy books I read. I get all of my talent from my mom, she encouraged me to write and she was a little bit of a writer herself.

What made you decide to feature gay characters in your work? My older brother was gay and I always wanted to feature more gay characters in my work because I felt they weren’t really given any attention. In fact, not many appeared in fantasy stories at all. So I started writing stories about gay men finding love in dangerous fantasy worlds.

Where do your ideas come from? I definitely know I was influenced by the classics in fiction and on TV but I try to make the stories my own. I mix influences and come up with other cultures similar to Vikings, Celtic tribes, Roman and Greek. Then I add some mystical elements or mythology. I find it to be really fun.

What do you do to tackle a project? Do you write outlines or keep it all in your head? No outlines for me. I write as a I go. Sometimes I jot down notes as I work on the story but mostly I see the scene in my head and just report what I see… lol.

Did you ever feel uncomfortable writing the “steamy scenes?” I was waiting for this question! 🙂 At first it was strange but now it’s no big deal. I must admit that I get a thrill out of sprinkling those loves scenes throughout the story.

How does your family react to you writing erotic romance or do they know? They know I write. That’s about it. I just tell them I write fantasy fiction and that’s it.

Have you ever thought of trying another genre? Sometimes. I like science fiction and horror too. I may even try some steampunk, not sure yet.

What do you like to read when you’re not writing? I like Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, I also like discovering new authors in fantasy and sci-fi fiction.

What current projects are you working on? Right now I’m in the middle of a new series about a gay elf thief. It’s my most ambitious series yet. Most of my tales have been two book series. So far with this one I have 3 tales with my new elf character and I’m hoping for a bunch more. It’s called Tales of an Elf Thief.

What does the future hold for Laura Lux’s fiction? Many more gay fantasy tales I hope!

Where can readers find you and your work? I have a facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009505140504   Other than that… you can find me on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. 🙂

Thoughts on The Warring Hearts Trilogy

I’ll admit when I first starting writing The Warring Hearts Trilogy, namely book 1 Bedeviled, I wasn’t as in love with it or the characters as I was with my previous two series.

Bedeviled

My wolf boy Alec of The Beast Within Trilogy felt as if he was my own, he breathed, he laughed, he cried. He felt pain, loss and fear. I could hear him, see him, and his problems were my problems. The more I wrote about Alec the more I fell in love with him. When he found true love I was thrilled, when he defeated evil, I cheered him on and still, I wanted to tell more tales about Alec and his close group of friends.

It was very much the same for Julian and Chris in The Boys of Raven Cove Series. Sure, Julian had his faults and he made many mistakes but this made him human. He was a witch and had the power to do almost anything but he still didn’t always do the right thing and his love for Chris was unconditional and unrelenting.

Chris too was not without his faults, he trusted too much, he was innocent and inexperienced but he never forgot his true love even when he was under the power of the most evil witch in the world, he still broke the spell and returned home where he belonged.  Julian and Chris were not perfect but their love was real. Their circle of friends was like a dysfunctional family and that’s what made them feel real and what gave them the room to grow over the series. It really worked for me.

In the Warring Heart Trilogy, Caleb the demon, a fallen angel, wants nothing more than to make amends for all of the wrongs he’s caused over the centuries. He escapes Hell and sets out to help mankind while trying to show Heaven that he is reformed and ready to return home….but as he makes his way on Earth he falls in love with the kindest human he’s ever known… Micah.

At first this story didn’t seem as exciting as the others, I wondered if Caleb and Micah were deserving of their own series and if they were as strong as the other characters. I pondered them, leaving them to their lives at the end of Bedeviled for a while. Then I returned to their world, connected in many ways to the two other worlds I had created and found a renewed interest. I started working on Book 2: Infernal and during that time I rediscovered Caleb and Micah. Their love for each other is pretty darn strong and what struck me with them is how they looked past what was on the surface and dug deeper. Micah didn’t see the ugly, damned soul that Caleb was, he saw past that to the angel deep, down inside Caleb, the compassion and love he had in his heart not only for Micah but for all of mankind.

While writing Infernal I relived their adventure in Book 1: Bedeviled and saw them in a new light. Micah and Caleb are strongest when they are together and doing what is right. As I worked on book 2, more of their personalities came out, their plight deepened and I got excited to learn more about them.

I am so glad I stuck with them. I have just finished book 2: Infernal and now have it going through its editing phase. I’m very excited to bring this book to you all. I think you will feel exactly the same as I do. This story has so much more to tell, and it is richer and more fascinating than I had ever imagined. Don’t look past this series… there is true love here, true compassion, true friendship. It’s about coming apart, coming together, and facing the challenges of this life and beyond.

I am proud to bring their story to you. Look for it soon, very soon! As soon as edits are done, Book 2 of the Warring Hearts Trilogy: Infernal will go live. Don’t miss it!!
